Catholic higher education should not simply be about acquiring academic, economic and social skills for it is ultimately about the kind of person a student becomes. A virtue approach to character construction has much to do with the trajectory of life: who we are now and who we are becoming.

Professor James Arthur, who earned his D. Phil. at Oxford University, is the Director of the Jubilee Centre for Character and Virtues in the School of Education at the University of Birmingham (United Kingdom). He has written widely on the relationship between theory and practice in education, particularly the links between character, virtues, citizenship, religion, and education.
