AXIS: Journal of Lasallian Higher Education

AXIS welcomes and continuously reviews scholarly and creative works which contribute to collective knowledge of the shared Lasallian mission in higher education contexts. Formats may include but are not limited to empirical research reports, theoretical/conceptual papers and case studies. Topics may include but are not limited to theory, description and assessment of:

• diverse contexts of Lasallian higher education, including formation structures and policies that support the development of colleges and universities as models of just communities;
• distinctively Lasallian pedagogy, especially in terms of impact on learning and other aspects of human development;
• solidarity initiatives that explicitly activate Lasallian higher education institutions and their community partners in describing, measuring and responding to social injustice.

AXIS is typically published twice a year. Submissions are accepted continuously. Submissions are typically acknowledged within 48 hours and assigned to peer reviewers (if appropriate) within one week. The blind peer review process is completed with communication to the author in two months. The AXIS Editorial Board actively supports sharing of scholarly and creative works regarding Lasallian higher education, and will publish all accepted works in a timely manner, with due consideration to original submission quality. The Editorial Board reserves the right to direct publication of special issues around relevant themes, and to assign unique submissions (e.g., videojournalism, chorale or orchestral works, social media projects) to comparably qualified guest reviewers.

Submission Requirements

Anyone may submit scholarly and creative work to the journal. All authors who submit works must include a biography (maximum 150-words), which will be available to readers with any work published in AXIS.

Manuscripts must be submitted using online submission process accessed here. Creators of other formats (e.g., movies, narrated slide shows, etc.) encouraged to consult with the editors about how to best make the work available within the context of the journal, which may include an alternative submission mechanism. We are fortunate to have available several skilled consultants who share our commitments to broadening conceptualizations of scholarly and creative work, and also to excellence in delivery and accessibility.

All submissions must include a cover page with the following information:

1. Title of the work
2. Full name, ministry affiliation, and e-mail address for each author
3. Full name, ministry affiliation, postal address, telephone, fax and e-mail address of the designated primary contact author
4. The type of paper or work submitted (Research Paper, Case Study, Photojournal, documentary, etc.)

For manuscripts, the overall suggested format is:

1. Cover Page
2. Abstract (200 words maximum) followed by 5-10 keywords to be used for indexing the paper
3. Author’s biography (150 word maximum)
4. Main text with subheadings as necessary (e.g., Introduction, Literature Review, Methods, Results, Discussion, Conclusions)
5. Acknowledgments
6. Notes
7. Bibliography
8. Appendices

Manuscripts must be submitted in letter format (8 ½ x 11-inch), with 1” margins, be double-spaced, including quotations and references, employ a 12-point font, and provide citations in Chicago Manual of Style (CMS) format.

Please do not format endnotes in the text of works. Endnote numbers should be indicated in superscript (e.g. superscript¹), and then typed at the end of the document (e.g., 1. Louis DeThomasis and Neal St. Anthony. Doing Right in a Shrinking World: How Corporate America Can Balance Ethics and Profit in a Changing Economy. Greenleaf Book Group Press, 2006: 19.)

Submissions may include graphics and hyperlinks to online multimedia objects or other online materials, where the latter are indicated and linked using a functioning hyperlink tool. Authors should ensure that all links are active at the time of submission.

Manuscripts and creative works are submitted, reviewed and published in the English language. The journal does not have sufficient resources to review or to copyedit works in languages other than English.

Recognizing that the Lasallian higher education community is a global one, an author whose work is published in AXIS in English may have an interest in making the work available in other languages of the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools (Spanish, French, Italian). An author wishing to do so may provide the Spanish, French, or Italian translation of the published English work, in Microsoft Word, with the translator’s name and contact information. (Non-manuscript works will be accepted in the format in which the editors accepted the original English work.) If AXIS agrees to publish a translated version alongside the English language original, the citation will clearly identify the translator, and place responsibility for the translation with the author and the translator. Machine translations are not accepted. AXIS may decline to publish translations.

To ensure blind review of all works submitted to Sections I and II (Original Scholarly / Creative Works and Shared Knowledge Archive, respectively), authors/submitters must:

• delete their names from the text, using instead “Author1” and year as needed in references and footnotes, etc.
• delete identification from the properties for the file(s) (e.g., in Microsoft applications such as Word or PowerPoint or MovieMaker: File > Save As > Tools (or Options with a Mac) > Security > Remove personal information from file properties on save > Save.

Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to confirm by check-off that their submission is in compliance with all of the following items. Submissions that do not adhere to these guidelines may be returned to authors.

1. The submission file is in Microsoft Word (.doc) file format (for manuscripts) or in a format that an AXIS editor has confirmed is publishable in the context of the journal. For non-doc format objects, the author may wish to use the ‘Comments to the Editor’ box at the end of the submission checklist to identify the editor with whom the author consulted.
2. Where appropriate, URLs for the references have been provided and are active.
3. The text is double-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
4. The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.
5. The instructions in Ensuring a Blind Review have been followed (if submitting for Sections I or II).
6. The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or, an explanation is provided in Comments to the Editor during submission process).
