ABSTRACT
The author describes how research is changing what we know and are able to do about water-borne illnesses that remain devastating forces undermining life and human dignity in many parts of the world. He draws connections between the Lasallian educational mission and the persistent inequality in global access to safe water and sanitation, then encourages Lasallian universities to acquaint themselves with and commit resources to addressing this issue in teaching and research agendas.

Thomas Clasen, J.D., Ph.D., is on the faculty in water, sanitation, and health at the University of London’s School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) as well as the Rose Salamone Gangarosa Chair of Sanitation and Safe Water at Emory University in Atlanta. He has also taught at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. After a successful law career as partner of Foley & Lardner and vice president and general counsel for Everett Smith Group, Ltd., Clasen has dedicated his time to researching waterborne diseases and water treatment technologies. He received master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of London in 2002 and 2006, respectively, and joined the LSHTM faculty in 2004. He has published more than 70 journal articles on sanitation and health.
