John Baptist De La Salle, John Henry Newman, and the Prospect of a Catholic Work College

ABSTRACT

This paper uses the recent decision on the part of Silver Lake College to become the nation’s first ‘Catholic Work College’ to consider the concept of a Work College in light of the Catholic educational tradition. In particular, this paper discerns notable contributions from John Henry Newman as well as the Lasallian tradition that work neatly in tandem to justify, if not encourage, the work college model. While Silver Lake College is itself a Franciscan institution and need not consider any formal adoption of Lasallian spirituality, this paper contends that any and all Catholic institutions of higher learning might benefit from the insights of Newman and La Salle’s Brothers, especially in the case of any Catholic institutions considering an application (to whatever degree) of the work college model.
