ABSTRACT

This essay served as a critical resource for Brothers of the Region of Lasallian Latin America (RELAL) as they prepared to participate in the 43rd General Chapter of the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools. The author begins with a reflection on the transformative moment of the Second Vatican Council’s call to all religious institutes to undertake adaptive renewal “with an entirely new approach to fidelity to their founder,” a moment that invigorated the 39th General Chapter (1966-1967). The author serially presents key moments in use and understanding of terminology such as “re-foundation,” extending an exploration begun in previous colloquia, speeches, and texts.
