ABSTRACT
Based on more than five decades of scholarly work, during his last year of life Brother Leo Burkhard wrote an account of the encounter of John Baptist de La Salle and Sister Louise at a hermitage called Parménie, on a high hill in Dauphiné, France. Parménie is a place of notable significance for the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools. Readers will see plainly the roles of Parménie and Soeur Louise in De La Salle’s spiritual journey. Brother Leo provides a lively account of how these two exemplars of faithful reliance on divine providence served as resources each to the other during challenges in their respective ministries. The present English text is a shortened and edited version of Brother Leo’s final, as yet unpublished French text, Rencontre Providentielle À Parménie. It was prepared and edited in August 2012 by Brother Paul Walsh and Brother Donald Mouton in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Brother Leo Burkhard, FSC, Ph.D. (1922 – 2007) is a well-known researcher and writer on the life of Saint John Baptist de La Salle. His doctoral thesis on Parménie was presented to the University of Grenoble in 1964. Brother Leo died in Denver in 2007, and his ashes are now interred in the chapel at Parménie. Brother Donald Mouton and Brother Paul Walsh translated, edited, and prepared this material for publication after the death of Brother Leo.
