Saint John Baptist de La Salle: A Retrospective Medical Differential Diagnosis

Abstract

This article proposes a retrospective medical differential diagnosis for Saint John Baptist de La Salle by synthesizing historical accounts of his chronic illnesses with modern clinical knowledge. Documented symptoms – recurrent rheumatism, fatigue, respiratory distress, skin changes, and systemic decline – suggest a complex, multisystem disorder. The analysis evaluates several autoimmune conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and vasculitides, with SLE emerging as the most consistent explanation. While acknowledging interpretive limitations, the study offers a medically plausible framework that deepens understanding of how chronic illness may have shaped De La Salle’s spirituality, resilience, and enduring educational mission.
