Abstract
Next year marks the 300th anniversary of In Apostolicae dignitatis solio, a Bull by Pope Benedict XIII recognizing the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools. Michael Hahn, Ph.D. suggests that this anniversary underscores the vital link between Lasallian ministries and the Catholic Church, although it often causes tension, particularly in educational contexts. The relationship between “Lasallian” and “Catholic” identities is crucial, with Pope Francis’s polyhedron model suggesting a way to harmonize these tensions. The Second Vatican Council’s reforms emphasized the “people of God,” marking a shift from a hierarchical church model. American Catholic education faces challenges as fewer religious figures lead, highlighting the need for a robust understanding of Catholic identity in educational ministries. Despite historical tensions, maintaining fidelity to the Catholic mission and engaging with contemporary challenges are essential. True ecclesial communion requires embracing diversity and the Holy Spirit’s guidance. This anniversary invites reflection on how Catholic and Lasallian identities enrich each other, fostering productive unity.
