General Council of the Brothers of the Christian Schools

ABSTRACT

This is portion of Circular 412: Educational Service of the Poor and the Promotion of Justice by General Council of the Brothers of the Christian Schools (Rome, 1980), pages 5-6, 7, 9-10, 57, 61-68, and 149-151. The document is a commentary on reports received from the Districts of the Institute between 1976 and 1978 on the educational service of the poor and action on behalf of justice. The promotion of justice was seldom mentioned in the reports, at least in an explicit manner. While service of the poor was a more familiar topic and priority, the promotion of justice seemed to be an unknown land where only a few explorers had gone. This orientation of the Church, especially after the 1971 Synod of Bishops, had in principle been accepted by the entire Institute; but it was taking some time for it to become a fact in action and in decisions. The Institute was reminded that, by choosing to become Brothers, we chose explicitly to work for the promotion of justice through Christian education.
