In addressing the subject of the role of the humanities at a Catholic university, today’s educational institutions are presented as the products of two great historical traditions of education: the creation of the university in the 13th century and the creation of the humanistic school in the 15th century. All of this is viewed within a rapid history of formal schooling in the Western world; and these two great traditions of schooling are presented as partners, albeit sometimes rivals, that interpenetrate one another in many ways. Four “hooks” on which to hang some basic goals that capture aspects of the tradition as valid today are also provided.
