ABSTRACT
This paper shares the beginnings of the story of how the dream of providing a world-class program of study about the origins and spirituality of Lasallian education in the USA became a reality and why it was named in honor of Brother Charles Henry Buttimer. Prior to 1986, the study of Catholic spirituality and schools of spirituality in the USA were pretty much only available in centers and universities conducted by groups like the Jesuits, Dominicans, Carmelites, and Sulpicians; and an in-depth and scholarly study of Lasallian spirituality was only available at Centro Internazionale Lasalliano (CIL) in Rome.

Brother William Mann, FSC, who holds a Doctor of Ministry degree from Colgate Rochester Divinity School (1990), is president emeritus of Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota. He is a former vicar general of the Brothers of the Christian Schools (2000-2007), who served as president of Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota from 2008 to 2018 and as president of the International Association of La Salle Universities from 2015 to 2018.
